Having watched the situation from the back of the room, a shadowy figure stepped out and moved unhurriedly to the second level of the command area. He gave a small nod to the guard posted at the doorway and casually headed out into the main concourse, taking great care to not garner any unwanted attention. Moving steadily through the concourse, he adjusted his gait until he reached one of the nearby wall-walks between the parapets, far enough away from the command area for the bleed of military-strength jammers to not interfere with his personal equipment, and he pressed a memorized number into his communicator.

The line clicked with the confirmation of a positive link. “The general is pulling back the troops, preparing to leave the city,” he transmitted. “The Capellans will be moving within the hour.”

A careful silence stretched on the other end of the line, and then a voice responded, clear and certain. “We are prepared. What are your orders?”

Looking over the parapet, he laid the perscomm carefully on the stone. His gaze reached outward, taking in the beautiful sight of the pristine fields outside of the city and the gentle current of the Grand Thames sending up small white-capped breaks in the crystal-clear water.

His gaze slipped toward Tara, where ugly clouds of smoke rose in the distance, the occasional burst of visible energy making it look like a thundercloud growing to consume the entire city. His expression tightened, and he thought of what would happen when the city fell.

He’d been in the command center for the entirety of the battle so far, and had seen how dire the situation looked for the Twelfth Hastati. While highly capable fighters, the Republic troops were at a significant disadvantage, as being forced to protect too many objectives was crippling their ability to operate offensively. If ever there was a time to capitalize on the chaos, it was now. There would be no better time to take action than with the Twelfth in full flight, when he could capitalize on their disorganization.

Still, he had kept his secret for so long it seemed wrong to bring things into the open like this. He thought back to all the years he had spent to keep his mission from discovery, of all the sacrifices he had made…

But now the time had come. The avalanche had begun; the rocks no longer had the chance to vote.

He took a deep, steadying breath, picked the perscomm back up, and spoke a single command:

“Activate the Grey Watch Protocol.”
